Cryptococcus is a fungus that is found in soil all over the world, usually in association with bird droppings. Cryptococcus neoformans is the most common Cryptococcus species that causes illness in humans. Cryptococcus gattii, a less common species that can also cause human disease, has been isolated from eucalyptus trees in tropical and subtropical regions. Another common form of cryptococcosis is central nervous system infection, such as meningoencephalitis. People with cryptococcal meningoencephalitis are usually immunocompromised. Symptoms may include fever, headache, or change in mental status.

Incubation times vary for infection due to Cryptococcus species. Symptoms from C. gattii infection are estimated to begin anywhere from 2-11 months after exposure. The incubation time for C. neoformans is not known.

What are the causes for cryptococcosis lung?

Cryptococcosis is caused by the fungus Cyptococcus neoformans. It is spread by contact with pigeon droppings, unwashed raw fruit or by infected individuals. People with immune deficiencies or lowered immunity (such as people undergoing cancer chemotherapy or organ transplants or those infected with HIV-AIDS) are at high risk for contracting this fungal infection.

What are the treatments for cryptococcosis lung?

Among the antibiotics used to treat cryptococcosis are the anti-fungal agents Amphotericin B, Flucytosine, and Fluconazole. These drugs may have serious side effects, so it is important for their use to be monitored carefully. Individuals with compromised immune systems, or under immune suppressive therapy, should be given prolonged drug treatment to prevent relapses.

What are the risk factors for cryptococcosis lung?

Most people in the United States who develop cryptococcal infections are HIV-positive. However, occasionally persons with no apparent immune system problems develop cryptococcosis. Infections with C. gattii have also occurred in healthy persons without compromised immune systems.

Is there a cure/medications for cryptococcosis lung?

Fluconazole may be used to treat asymptomatic pulmonary infections, according to research. However, if the host is healthy and has no symptoms, this method may not be used. The first line of treatment for people with pulmonary cryptococcosis and brain problems is amphotericin B or fluconazole. People with pulmonary cryptococcosis are more likely to develop cryptococcal meningitis, so they have a lower risk of contracting it. Even people with compromised immune systems should avoid fungi-infested areas. People with cryptococcosis who are on long-term medication must take their home medications every day as well as attend all of their follow-up appointments. This will prevent the disease from worsening.
